Referencing with Cyfeiriad

A guide to the Aberystwyth School of Education BibTeX style (version 0.9.0).

Preamble

Download cyfeiriad.sty and cyfeiriad.bst into your LaTeX folder: https://github.com/CyrusCastle/Cyfeiriad/

Put the following in the preamble of your LaTeX document (before \begin{document}):

		\usepackage{cyfeiriad}

Then, where you want the reference list to appear (usually at the end), list your .bib files:

		\addcontentsline{toc}{section}{References}
		\bibliography{references}

How To Cite

In your text

For sources with three or more authors, the first citation names them all, e.g. (Wood, Bruner and Ross, 1976), and later citations use "et al.", e.g. (Wood et al., 1976).

In your .bib file

Open each box to see the fields for that kind of source and an example. Some general rules:

Same Author, Same Year (choosing the a/b order)

When an author has more than one source in the same year, letters are added automatically (2000a, 2000b), in alphabetical order of title. To choose the order yourself, add forceextralabel to the entries.

Field: forceextralabel, a letter (a, b, ...), which is printed after the year and sets the order. It can also be other text, e.g. {~[Welsh trans.]} and {~[English trans.]} to between translations of a document, or {~\upshape(25~Jan)} to include dates i.e. for Hansard debates. Entries with a forced letter come first; any without one continue from the last forced letter.

Note: if you are using forceextralabel for a group of documents, i.e. multiple documents by Rose and Meyer (2000), then you really ought to use forceextralabel for the entire group of documents covered by Rose and Meyer in 2000. It is not necessary, but will make the process smoother.

Example:

		@article{rose2000:firstwork,
		  title={Universal Design for Learning},
		  author={Rose, D. and Meyer, A.},
		  journal={Journal of Special Education Technology},
		  volume={15},
		  number={1},
		  pages={67--70},
		  year={2000},
		  forceextralabel = {a},
		}

		@book{rose2000:technology,
		  author = {Rose, D. and Meyer, A.},
		  year = {2000},
		  forceextralabel = {b},
		  title = {The Future is in the Margins: The Role of Technology and Disability in Educational Reform},
		  publisher = {Center for Applied Special Technology},
		  address = {Peabody, USA}
		}

Produces:

Rose, D. and Meyer, A. (2000a), ‘Universal Design for Learning’, Journal of Special Education Technology, vol. 15, no. 1, pp. 67–70.

Rose, D. and Meyer, A. (2000b), The Future is in the Margins: The Role of Technology and Disability in Educational Reform, Peabody, USA: Center for Applied Special Technology.

Ibid. (citing the same source again)

Command: \ibid[page]{key}

Required: key (the cite key of the source you are repeating)

Optional: page, written as in \citep, e.g. p.~14

Example:

		\citep{dillon1985} ... \ibid{dillon1985} ... \ibid[p.~14]{dillon1985}

Produces: (Dillon, 1985) ... (ibid.) ... (ibid.: p. 14)

If you load hyperref, "ibid." links to the reference.

Also supported, without examples here: @inbook (a chapter of a single-authored book: the Book fields plus chapter and/or pages), @mastersthesis, @techreport, @manual, @booklet, @proceedings and @unpublished. Any other entry type is treated as @misc.
